- Hi Greg!
-
- Greg Blanchard wrote on March 18th expressing dismay that an early March
- Sam Report and a mid-March Fido crosspost, both alluding to rumors of
- difficulties in North American distribution of Amigas, specifically the
- A4000T, and of possible forthcoming changes. As I understand it, his
- main concern was that he had seen neither article earlier, and was
- wondering whether his/a provider was "filtering" out messages.
-
-
- Sorry for the long duration before replying. I have some medical problems
- which caused a severe rise in blood pressure apparently the day/evening of
- my original post. (I'm not using an insanity defence against the derogatory
- replies which have since been collecting; I'm taking them as seriously as the
- few supportive Email messages which I've also received.)
-
- At any rate the following morning I passed out from blood loss (sort of
- like a nose bleed...yech, don't want to talk about it.....fortunately my
- family came home in time to get me emergency aid. Apparently I lost
- around 3 pints of blood and have pretty much been on my back ever since.
-
- My eldest son has been faithfully running Thor each day, on my miggy, to
- pick up all my messages, as well as AmiQuick for the Fido stuff. He tells
- me that Thor is going to give my hard drives a fit if I don't do some
- cleaning up.
-
-
- >>I've been discussing this subject, at length, since March 9th, on FidoNet
- >>and elsewhere. See the following two excerpts from my previous posts:
-
- >This was the point of my post. I HAVEN'T SEEN ANY OTHER INFO ON THIS!
-
- I guess I should have said that I had been actively beating the bushes to
- chase out a few more rumors//information (incredibly similar commodities
- in the marketing and business worlds). My included cross-posts were
- intended to indicate that the question had been raised at some length on
- FidoNet but received very minimal interest.
-
- "Official News Releases" and the such seldom contain more information
- than is intended for the public//the bankers//the creditors//whomever is
- important at the time to know. Typically information is first leaked,
- "rumors" are started, response is monitored and often the response or a
- brand new scenario created from previous rumors tips the executive
- decision//public perception//competitor's responses, etc.
-
- What I'm saying, Greg, is that I don't think that there was any more
- specific info to circulate on the entire subject....just the cumulative
- brainstorming of industry observers and usenet//Fidonet participants.
-
- Definitely something had come very amiss by mid-December.
-
-
-
- >>Now as to Asha Develder being confused.
-
- I believe that you included the words, "And now this on FidoNet
- crossposted by a very reliable person confused as I.." I didn't start that
- comment. Unfortunately, I didn't leave it to lie either.
-
- In Asha's case, I intimated that she should be more than familiar with
- what had been discussed, regarding distribution problems in North America, on
- FidoNet, being a prodigious contributer herself, as well as co-moderator.
-
- I then used the word "naive".
-
- >Don't confuse naivete with a different method of information gathering and
- >different attitude toward that info. Asha has developed her sources -in
- >her own way- and they are frequently better than many rumormongers here.
-
- My exact words were, "See why I said that Americans are so naive? ;-)"
-
- In all honesty, this was an 'private, household' joke that just went in the
- wrong place. I wish I could take it back. In all sincerity, it was never
- meant in a derogatory fashion towards Asha, nor any American!
-
- The background is simple, I'm Canadian, born and bred here for 47 years. I'm
- also a 'Resident Alien' (what a #@*&! name for a landed immigrant...Look, See
- My Alien Antennae!) in the US. My wife, Judith, 51 next month, is a US Air
- Force brat, who has lived in Canada for the past 20 years. We have two boys,
- early teens, and we are now living back and forth until we can get our house
- in Toronto sold. Then we'll be permanent residents of the US southwest, New
- Mexico for a start (most of Judith's family is there).
-
- My wife and I have for fifteen years argued the merits of the cynical Canadian
- and the more rose-colored glasses view of Americans. Canadians have a much,
- much larger proportion of immigrants from war torn and otherwise poor nations
- than the United States. These people don't see the McD golden arches at the
- end of the rainbow, nor do they believe promises, even little Amiga ones,
- without first going over every rumor, every opinion, every reputed fact and
- then looking for motive, back doors and trying read the lines between the
- lines. Many of them would make excellent intelligence agents or detectives.
-
- Greg, I do think that there isn't that much separating rumor from information.
- As any number of people in the information gathering/analysis business, be
- they intelligence agents, detectives, auditors, stock market anlaysts....
- several small rumors are often worth more than one piece of "verified
- information".
-
- >My point is that not even the original "SAM report" appeared in these
- >venues and no one crossposted it or made any reference to it until your
- >Fido effort. I find it rather odd....
-
- Any ideas as to why, by now?
-
-
- >Do not confuse optimism tinged with suspended disbelief with naivete! Many
- >of us like to give people enough rope to hang themselves when there is no
- >compelling reason not to.
-
- My wife, the American, would probably agree with you completely. She
- considers me a cynic who always looks at the downside of a situation first.
- My father, who escaped with my mother from Estonia, during WWII, met and
- married in Sweden and then immigrated to Canada, where I was born, always
- told me, "Keep your feet planted firmly on the ground, be ready to run, dream
- but don't expect, and be pleasantly surprised when something works out really
- well. Meanwhile keep looking for the catch."
-
- I do think that predicting 10,000 units of A4000T's and reaching a goal of
- (for arguements sake) 500 is information valuable to would-be dealers, current
- Amiga owners wondering whether to upgrade, how long to hold on for the
- promised Power Amiga (what indeed are its chances, given track record to
- date), whether to buy additional software, etc.
-
- Calculate A4000T sales based on the simple 10:1 ratio between US and
- Canadian population. Canadian sales have been between 15 to 30// ergo US
- sales would be about 150 to 300. Lets give that a margin of error of
- approximately 100% and you still havesubstantially under 1000 sales. A few
- hundred, nay 500, one way nor the other, doesn't really mean much IMHO.
